The Northwest Division leading Oklahoma City Thunder take on the surging New Orleans Hornets, winners of eight straight games, on Monday night of the NBA TV schedule. The Thunder feature the top scoring combination in the NBA, thanks to point guard Russell Westbrook and guard-forward Kevin Durant. The Hornets have won games on the backs of point guard Chris Paul and power forward David West and a stout defense. Oklahoma City may have a high-flying offense, but their lack of a defense will ultimately decide whether or not New Orleans extends their NBA TV schedule winning streak to nine games.
The Utah Jazz have hit a rough spot in the NBA TV schedule, losing four straight heading into this week, and will get no rest against the two-time defending world champion Los Angeles Lakers. The Jazz have one of the most versatile point guards in the NBA in Deron Williams, who is a major reason Utah ranks second in the NBA in assists and 12th in points per game. The Lakers have righted the ship, and nothing less should be expected from shooting guard Kobe Bryant and center Pau Gasol. Los Angeles is showing its age on defense, but they make up for it by ranking 7th in points per game and 2nd in rebounds per game. The Lakers are still very tough to beat at home on the NBA TV schedule, and the Jazz could very well be headed towards their fifth straight loss.
The San Antonio Spurs own the best record on the 2010-11 NBA TV schedule, but they’ll face a Utah Jazz team hungry for a win with a strong home court advantage on Wednesday. The Spurs have the best points scored/points against differential in the NBA Western Conference, and Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker are two of the fastest guards in the league. The Jazz lost five straight games heading into this week of the NBA TV schedule, and it will be tough to break that skid on the second night of a back-to-back against San Antonio. Utah has a great home field advantage and will be ready to prove they are better than their recent play.
Thursday night of the NBA TV schedule is always filled with competitive basketball, and this week’s slate of games is no exception. The Boston Celtics and Portland Trail Blazers are both playing at a high level, and will feature strong playing in and around the paint. The Celtics and Trail Blazers have run off streaks of five straight wins over the past week, and both teams did it on the backs of good defense. Portland has been hampered by injuries all season, including the loss of shooting guard Brandon Roy and center Greg Oden, but they still have managed to play stout defense to make up for a lack of offense. The Celtics are getting healthy thanks to the return of Kevin Garnett, and have barely skipped a beat from the play that got them to last year’s NBA Finals.
Two fairly hot teams clash on Friday night of the NBA TV schedule, as the Orlando Magic travel north to play against the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls and Magic feature tough defenses and quality rebounding, both ranking in the top 10 in the NBA in each category. Chicago point guard Derrick Rose is making a strong case for league MVP, and the addition of power forward Carlos Boozer has made the Bulls a championship caliber team. Orlando’s blockbuster trade for Gilbert Arenas and Jason Richardson has gone well, as the team has surrounded center Dwight Howard with quality shooters. This could be a preview of the Eastern Conference Finals, as both the Magic and Bulls are filled with talented players.
The Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks play in different conferences, but their play on the NBA TV schedule has been very similar. The Hawks and Mavericks rank in the top 10 in assists and points allowed per game, and in the bottom 20 in points and rebounds per game. Atlanta features a super athletic rotation headlined by forward Josh Smith and guard Joe Johnson. Dallas has one of the best power forward shooters ever in Dirk Nowitzki, and a Hall of Fame point guard in Jason Kidd. This game is pretty evenly matched, but the Mavericks bench and home court advantage should cool down the red hot Hawks.
The greatest rivalry on the NBA TV schedule renews itself on Sunday, as the Boston Celtics go West to face off against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Celtics and Lakers met in the NBA Finals a season ago, and are on pace for a potential rematch this season. Boston’s Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen form one of the NBA’s most experienced and talented back courts. Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and Ron Artest lead an equally experienced and talented front court for the Lakers. There’s very little hype that needs to be added to this already juicy matchup, making it a perfect way to end another week of the NBA TV schedule.
