Drew Barrymore took home a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award last Saturday for her performance as “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale in HBO’s made-for-TV movie “Grey Gardens.” Directed by Michael Sucsy, “Grey Gardens” was inspired by a documentary made in 1972 about Edith “Big Edie” Ewing Bouvier Beale, portrayed by Jessica Lange, and her daughter, Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale. Big Edie came from the wealthy Bouvier family that later produced Jackie O (Big Edie was her aunt). Raised in comfort and affluence, Big Edie married Phelan Beale (played by Ken Howard in the film) and moved into Grey Gardens, a mansion in East Hampton. Together, they had three children: Little Edie, Phelan Jr., and Bouvier.

In 1934, Phelan left his wife and later divorced her; she retained the house as part of the settlement. Shortly after the divorce in 1946, Big Edie had a falling out with her father, John Bouvier, Jr., who responded by reducing Edith’s inheritance from $825,000 to $65,000, which was left in a trust that would be controlled entirely by her sons. From this sum, she received $300 a month to support herself and her daughter (her sons were by then married and had moved away). Grey Gardens proved too large and expensive to maintain and subsequently fell into disrepair. Big Edie and Little Edie became recluses.

By the time the women were discovered by the media, they were living without running water and were sharing their home with a multitude of stray cats and raccoons. Through the financial aid of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Lee Radziwill, the house was restored and the Bouvier Beale women were saved.

Big Edie died in 1977. Little Edie passed away in 2002.
