Henry’s greatest wish, we are told, was to have a legitimate son and heir. While some of his mistresses were able to bear him sons, Catherine of Aragon was not. She did bear him a daughter, Mary, but when she began to exhibit symptoms of menopause, Henry divorced her and married Anne Boleyn.

Henry’s marriage to Anne Boleyn was not accepted by either the Catholic Church or his countrymen. And while Anne also bore Henry a daughter, the future Queen Elizabeth, their marriage quickly disintegrated and Henry ordered Anne to be executed by beheading on May 19, 1536.

Jane Seymour was next in line and she bore Henry a son, Prince Edward. Unfortunately, Jane had a difficult childbirth and died soon after. Later, Henry claimed that she was his “true” wife.

Wife number four was Anne of Cleves from Flanders. The marriage was arranged before Henry laid eyes on her, and when she arrived in England, Henry found Anne to be utterly unattractive. Henry quickly had the marriage annulled and Anne returned to her native country with her head still firmly on her shoulders.

Henry’s fifth wife, Catherine Howard, was a relative of Anne Boleyn’s. She was young and beautiful, while Henry by this time fit neither of those descriptions. According to historians, Catherine was unfaithful to Henry, and as a result, met the same demise as her cousin, Anne Boleyn, had.

Henry’s sixth and final wife was Catherine Parr, a wealthy widow. They were married for only four years when Henry, now obese and suffering from multiple health problems, passed away. They had no children together.
