Happy Back to the Future Day… or is it?

Holly flux-capacitor! During the holiday weekend, Back to the Future fans flooded the internet with shout-outs to their favorite flying DeLorean in honor of Marty McFly’s 88 mile-per-hour trip into the future on July 5, 2010. Everyone from Elizabeth Banks to Colin Hanks retweeted a “that’s heavy” reference.  Even the random guy at the Apple store tried to flex his geekitude when he joked with me about Doc Brown strolling in for a new iPhone.

One small problem: the DeLorean never traveled to 2010. Any BTTF fan would know that. Turns out, Future Day was just a big, fat, Back to the Future hoax.

Back to the future hoax

The whole time travel calamity started when the movie blog Total Film blasted a tweet declaring July 5 “future day,” claiming this was the date Marty, Doc, and a sedated Jennifer hovered into the future. Total Film admitted they didn’t know about their movie trivia goof until after they published their tweet. Instead of fessing up to the mistake, they released a photoshopped version of the DeLorean dashboard (seen above) and the rumor took off like a 1.21 jiggawatt bolt of lightning.

Great Scott! Why did they do this?

Turns out the guys at Total Film are just a bunch of buttheads. Back to the Future ended (and Back to the Future II began) with Doc Brown firing up the Mr. Fusion to take the gang to October 21, 2015.

In the first movie, Doc Brown does intend to travel “25 years into the future” from 1985, which would be 2010, but he rambles on about how November 5, 1955 is “a red letter day in the history of science” and you know the story from there. In the end, Doc never set the time circuits for any point in time for 2010.

While the date July 5, 2010 doesn’t have any real significance in the Back to the Future lore, it’s not far off from celebrating the first film’s 25th anniversary on July 3, 1985.

Pay homage to this great story of the past (and the future) by throwing on your ski vest and cracking open a Pepsi Free for another time-traveling adventure with Back to the Future and other sci-fi classics by tuning into the DISH Network Premium Movie Package.

Great Programs on Versus – Not on DirecTV!

Currently, due to a dispute over carriage rates, DirecTV does not carry Versus, a national sports network. As a result, DirecTV customers are missing out on some of the great sports programming that Versus offers. Here’s two examples of the excellent programming you could see if you had Versus. (more…)

Keep your FOX channels by switching to DISH Network!

Currently, Time Warner Cable customers across the country are in danger of losing their FOX channels as of January 1, 2010. Customers could miss out on three BCS Bowl games, parts of the NFL playoffs and the new season of American Idol if Time Warner Cable doesn’t pay up. (more…)
