The United States is slated to take on England this Saturday, June 12, in their opening game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Turn on ABC from DISH Network (2:30 pm ET) to watch as these teams square off in Royal Bafokeng Stadium in South Africa!
Meet the Players
Preliminary squad announcements in May listed the following players from each team:

Bob Bradley, head coach of the U.S. Men’s national team, said, “We are confident that this is a group of players that will work together and be committed to doing whatever it takes to be successful. We feel the roster has a good balance of players who have been a part of previous World Cups, those who have gained great experience in qualifying and Confederations Cup and some newer faces that have proved they belong. We are extremely excited…[to] begin the great challenge of playing in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.”
Fabio Capello, England’s head coach, commented similarly: “I’m very pleased to be here and my team is happy to finally be in South Africa. I hope this World Cup in South Africa is good for this country and, of course, for England. We now have to concentrate on the tournament and prepare well for the event.”
The coaches must make any remaining squad changes this week, as the deadline for final rosters is set for June 10, just one day before the opening ceremony. This is especially crucial for both Bradley and Capello, as each of their teams has at least one primary starter suffering an injury.
Rio Ferdinand Out, Jozy Altidore Questionable
Rio Ferdinand of England’s team is officially sidelined from the Cup after damaging his left knee in training after arriving in South Africa. This is devastating for someone considered to be one of soccer’s finest Defenders and who is also England’s team captain. Watch for Ferdinand to be replaced by Michael Dawson.
In a similar, unfortunate boat, the United State’s top starting forward, Jozy Altidore, is questionable for this match after spraining his ankle in practice on Wednesday, June 2. The team has him listed as day-to-day but is confident that his participation is likely, at least at some point in the Cup.
Although the matchup is sure to be an exciting one, it will be interesting to see how these (potential) exclusions will affect play.
Head-to-Head History
The United States and England don’t have an extensive competitive history, as they’ve only met 9 times before this year’s World Cup, but both teams are considered to be solid players in a competitive field. England carries a 7-2 record against the States, most recently tallying a 2-0 victory in 2008 when they last met; the United State’s most notable win came in 1950’s World Cup, where they edged out England 1-0.
Chances, Chances
The United States and England join Slovenia and Algeria in Group C. According to ESPN Soccernet, England carries an 85 percent chance of advancing from the Group, while the United States has about a 56 percent chance of also moving forward. Given that Slovenia and Algeria are ranked 35th and 62nd, respectively, the probability of both England and the United States advancing seems likely. Overall, it’s estimated that the United States has a 4:1 chance of winning the match against England, and an 80:1 chance of winning the whole soccer shebang!
